Friday Banquet keynote address ~
Creating a Heritage of Stewardship

Mr. David M. Sutherland Chairman,
Governor's Commission on Protecting the Chesapeake Bay through Sustainable Forestry

We all leave a Legacy... including one of how we responded to the call to stewardship. Stewardship is everything - a call, a gift, a lifestyle. A life of stewardship calls us to share a part of ourselves--our time, our gifts, our resources.

Whether speaking metaphorically, theologically or literally, seeds of stewardship must be passed onto each generation, to be sown, nurtured, and then ultimately passed on to the next generation.

Our forests are a living legacy. We inherit them from our predecessors, tend them while they are under our care, but ultimately they out live us and the condition of what we leave to our successors speaks loudly as to the type stewards we were, thus becoming our legacy.

Join us as we learn from the experts and discuss with each other the many aspects of forest land acquisition , forest management programs and options, and what can be done to ensure that a sound Heritage of Stewardship is our legacy.

Saturday Session I

You've Got Land!

Now what?!

What does a professional forest management plan (FMP) accomplish economically, aesthetically and environmentally; are FMPs able to incorporate non-economic goals, or multiple goals simultaneously; how do I get a FMP prepared? How do "others" (including not only lenders but other vendors, loggers, tax assessors) view land under a FMP vs. "unmanaged" land; what is your experience in the economic return of land with or without a FMP, or from timber sales with or without FMP/consulting forester? How do the various members of the forest product industries relate to one another in providing landowners with economic value/return on investment; what can landowners do to help themselves in this regard?

Mr. Andy Martin, Forester, BB&T Wealth Mgmt.

Mr. JT Anderson , Colonial Farm Credit timber lending specialist

Mr. Richard Lewis, President, Forest Resources Association

Saturday Session II

MALPF, CREP, FIP, FLEP, WIP, WHIP, BIP, Forest Legacy, Rural Legacy......

What does it all mean? What does it mean for you and your land?

What do all these acronyms stand for? Why are there so many different programs? What programs will assist me with immediate assistance in managing my forestland; what programs allow me to realize non-forest economic value from my forestland while keeping it as productive forest?

Donna Sasscer, St. Mary's County Agricultural Planner

Steve Koehn, Maryland Forest Service Director

The Honorable

David R. Brinkley

Senator,
Maryland General Assembly

Luncheon Address ~ Legacy and the Legislature

effect you and your land. Find out what you can do to protect your rights,
your resources, and your legacy.

Saturday Session III

Leaving a Living Legacy
The need for long term planning:

What will your legacy be?

Preparation for transferring the legacy to the next generation (your own kids or others) can be daunting. Tax considerations; what preplanning is needed and when should it start; what are the financial "thresholds" to be aware of; ways to defer or eliminate financial/tax consequences for owner or recipient. What is the role of attorney, CPA and financial planner; what "plans" require legal documentation? If estate or trust planning involves easements, who drafts the easement – how much say does landowner have in easement language; how broad or narrow might an easement be?

Mr. Kelly Wright, ~ BB&T Wealth Mgmt - Financial Planner

Mr. James A. List, Esq. ~ Attorney & Estate Planner

Ms. Meredith Lathbury, Esq. ~ Eastern Shore Land Conservancy

FRIDAY AFTERNOON PRE-MEETING FIELD WORKSHOP - Pre-registration required.

Learn the basics through simple hands-on demonstrations and do-it-yourself practice time.
